Dr. Peter Cardon received his Ph.D. in 2005, primarily focusing on
intercultural communication. Some of his primary research interests involve the
role of marketing and communication in international tourism. He has worked with
the International Tourism Research Institute at the University of South Carolina
on tourism projects in Asia, Africa, and the Middle East.
Before Cardon completed his doctoral degree, he acted as international marketing
director for a tour company that marketed travel tours throughout the Western
United States. He worked with agents and clients in more than 50 countries and,
in particular, targeted tourists from three major markets: Japan, Taiwan, and
Brazil.
Cardon’s interest in international tourism started during his undergraduate
studies when he backpacked through approximately 25 countries in Asia, Europe,
Africa, and Latin America. Wanderlust ultimately lead to his professional
interest in international tourism.
He is particularly interested in China and has conducted the majority of his
research there. He has taken three year-long work assignments in China: Taiwan
in 1992, Hong Kong in 1997, and Jilin in 2002. He speaks Mandarin (standard
Chinese) and Cantonese. Recently, Dr. Cardon has worked with Dr. Harrill and
Chinese partners conducting research about Chinese attitudes towards tourism
development.
In addition to his work with the International Tourism Research Institute, Dr.
Cardon teaches courses in business communication, intercultural communication,
and social and cultural issues in tourism. He is also Director of International
Exchanges for the College of Hospitality, Retail, and Sport Management.
