A fast-lane connection at NASCAR
Sports and entertainment management senior Jarett Gerald is a great example of how HRSM students can graduate with an exciting variety of real world experiences.

“By the time I had my big internship this past summer, I had already worked in ticket sales for the NBA, had several event management projects, and learned about video production by actually shooting footage of USC sports and helping produce videos,” he said.

Even with these great experiences, the best was yet to come.  Jarett Gerald was selected as one of 18 students nationwide to participate in NASCAR’s Diversity Internship Program during the summer of 2011.

“I knew that USC would find me a really good internship but this experience with NASCAR has been a huge highlight,” he said. “My supervisor worked directly with bringing in new major sponsors for NASCAR so I was able to learn how these multi-million dollar partnerships are created with companies like Coca-Cola and Sprint.

“I was even part of the team that came up with different ideas to ensure these companies were receiving the maximum return for the millions of dollars they invested in NASCAR.  As you can imagine, this is quite an experience for a college senior!”

Tim Lister, NASCAR’s senior manager for business development, was impressed with Jarret’s internship: “The NASCAR New York office was very excited to have Jarett with us this summer. He has a tireless work ethic and has made a great impression on all the staff. No job is too big or small for him to handle.”

HRSM global opportunities

Dr. Kline confirms that students can choose from a wide range of experiential opportunities throughout the state, country and world, and HRSM continues to search for new corporate partners for practicums and internships and for new study abroad locations.

“We’ve provided key contacts here for friends of the college who might want to explore new internship partnerships, along with a listing of the study abroad locations and contacts sure to tempt any student considering our programs” she said.
