Target to HRSM students: “What’s your brand?”

A red and white bullseye. A white apple. Those familiar golden arches. What do all of these things have in common? They are, of course, the logos for Target, Apple and McDonald’s.

“Brands aren’t exclusive to big companies,” said Jessica Springborn, senior field campus recruiter at Target. “Brands can and should also be very personal to you as individuals.”

As part of a campus visit on Sept. 17, 2012, Target executives asked HRSM students to consider their own personal brand. “What makes you attractive to future employers? What sets you apart from others?” they asked.

Students shared their own brand identities with words like “leader,” “trustworthy,” and “passionate,” among others, and gave personal examples for how each characteristic has played out in real-life recently.

“Building your personal brand is critical to a successful job search,” said Pervis Walker, a store team leader for Target and University of South Carolina alumnus.

“This is an important time for you as college students,” he added. “You should start identify these qualities in yourself and begin to focus on how you communicate these characteristics to others, including potential future employers.”

Target visits HRSM: What's Your Brand? The Target campus visit featured two separate live presentations to students enrolled in the required HRSM 301 professional development course.

The College of Hospitality, Retail and Sport Management (HRSM) has a strong and growing relationship with Target Corporation and continues to place a number of graduates within the company, many of which stem from HRSM’s Retail and Fashion Merchandising Department.

Target Corporation is the nation’s second largest retail chain behind only Wal-Mart. The company operates nearly 2,000 stores in 48 states, and touts total store square footage of 222,420,000 square feet and 2011 revenue of more than $68 billion. Recent accolades include making Fortune magazine’s 2012 list of the “World’s Most Admired Companies” and being named a “Top 50 Companies for Diversity” by DiversityInc magazine.

Target promotes career and internship opportunities for college students online at http://corporate.target.com/careers/college-students. Interested students are recommended to contact Mike Moody, director of internships for the Department of Retail and Fashion Merchandising, at 803-777-0775.
