Elizabeth Martin is a recent graduate from the Integrated Information Technology (iIT) program (formerly the Technology Support and Training Management program). Although she graduated from the program in December, 2009, she didn’t start her college career as an iIT major.

Elizabeth found the iIT program after her first internship with the Courtyard Marriott downtown. While she was interning, the hotel was transitioning from a privately owned hotel to the Marriott brand. During the transition, a team came in to train employees on the new computer systems they would use when the hotel opened as a Marriott. Elizabeth said, “I enjoyed this week of training so much I thought maybe I should pursue a career with computers.”

After learning about the iIT program in the College of HRSM, Elizabeth changed her major. “I didn’t really know much about technology going into the major so I learned plenty of new things in each class that I took. The internship preparation course was a great class and a perfect opportunity to find out more about local IT companies and the internships that are available to students. Without this class I never would have found my first internship.

“Since the day I joined the program I learned new things and explored the career paths in information technology. I truly enjoyed working with the faculty in the iIT program and am grateful for the networking opportunities that the program provided,” she said.

The Marriott internship that led Elizabeth to the iIT major was her first, but not her last. Her next internship was with VC3, a company that provides a full range of IT services to public and private sector clients across South Carolina, North Carolina, and Georgia. As a project services intern there she helped manage information technology projects. Then later she held another internship at CSC working in mainframes. After her internship with CSC, the company offered her a full-time position in mainframe systems.

More recently Elizabeth returned to VC3 where she was offered a full-time position as a project coordinator. “I went back to VC3 because I really enjoyed the project management that I did in my internship there,” Elizabeth said.

“I enjoyed many iIT classes. I have used the advanced Excel skills that I learned so many times; I think that they are vital skills for anyone in the working world. I also really enjoyed the Oracle/SQL class that Dr. Brookshire taught. Databases provide a refreshing way to organize and display data. I think that the iIT program gives you the basic technology skills to go into information technology in any industry and the possibilities are endless!” she said.

Elizabeth’s internships provided her with great experience and ultimately landed her in full-time positions after she graduated. But her internships were not her only involvement in the IT community. While still in college, Elizabeth served as a founding member and president of the USC student chapter of the Association of IT Professionals (AITP). “We are hoping that this group will grow and become a great opportunity for students to network with professionals in the IT industry and help them find internships and job opportunities,” she said.

When asked about future plans, Elizabeth said, “I graduated Magna cum Laude which I was very excited about. I also managed to complete three internships, which was great experience for the real world. My next goal is to complete my CAPM (Certified Associate in Project Management) certification.”
