The mission of the School
of Hotel, Restaurant and Tourism Management (HRTM) is to prepare
undergraduate and graduate students for challenging careers in the
hospitality and tourism industry, to conduct applied research that
impacts the hospitality and tourism industry on a global level, and
to provide professional and community service that promotes the
economic development of the state of South Carolina and throughout

Hudson appointed to Columbia Authority for Conventions, Sports and Tourism
Dr. Simon Hudson, chair of the Richardson Family SmartState Center of Economic Excellence in Tourism and Economic Development at the University of South Carolina, has been appointed by Mayor Steve Benjamin to the Board of Directors for the Columbia Metropolitan Midlands Authority for Conventions, Sports and Tourism. The mission of the Authority includes: directing and managing the activities and mission of the Columbia Metropolitan Convention and Visitors Bureau, the Columbia Regional Sports Council and the Columbia Regional Visitors Center, and overseeing the development and operation of the Columbia Metropolitan Convention Center.

HRTM's Director of Graduate Studies, Dr. Sandy Strick, has been honored as one of the 2013 recipients of the Mortar Board Award for “Excellence in Teaching." Recipients of these awards are nominated by students that have been motivated, enlightened and inspired by their faculty.
In 1988, the Mortar Board Honor Society began acknowledging professors for their achievements and dedication and who had contributed significantly to student success. Excellence in teaching is the single criterion necessary to be nominated for the award.
