Kathy heads the College’s student services and will teach HRSM 301. She comes to HRSM with 17 years of student services experience.

Previously, Kathy directed student services for the Department of Criminology and Criminal Justice at the University of South Carolina. Along with managing daily services, Kathy coordinated student advisement, planned class schedules, recruited and coordinated services for adjunct faculty, coordinated scholarship and awards day activities, and rendered senior checks.

She is the 2004 recipient of the Ada B. Thomas Staff Advisor of the Year Award.

Prior to coming to the University, she was a Career Counselor/Disability Services Coordinator at Midlands Technical College. She began her career at Central Carolina Technical College where she was hired as the Transitional Studies Counselor and later coordinated admissions and student services for the Nursing and Allied Health Division.

She is married to Dwayne Smiling, has a 14 year old daughter, Kelli, and a dog, Nico.
