Michael Baens
During the summer of 2005, I completed my internship at the Office of Information
Resources at University Housing (located at 1215 Blossom Street). In the
course of my internship, I completed many tasks that related to my major.
One of the tasks that we did routinely was the general check-ups on the
various computer labs throughout the campus.
One of the bigger activities
that we handled was taking care of Palmetto Boy's State. During this week, our office
had the task of making sure that the counselors for Boys State had everything
they needed, in terms of computers, Internet connection, and projectors.
Everyday that week, we setup laptops and projectors at the four corners
of the Coliseum. We also monitored the presentations to make sure that
there were no problems with the laptops and/or projectors. One of the other
tasks that we accomplished was the implementing of Microsoft AntiSpyware
on every computer that we oversee.
During this process, we went to every
computer that we oversee, and installed Microsoft AntiSpyware. Some of
the various buildings that we have computers at are Housing, Patterson,
Maxcy, Preston, Bates House, West Quad, East Quad, South Quad, and Capstone.
Not only did we install Microsoft AntiSpyware on computers at each of these
locations, but we also did routine maintenance and troubleshooting at each
of these locations.
Another duty that we perform at our office is ID validation. Whenever students
and/or employees need their IDs validated, they would come to our office
and we would either check to make sure they were in the system or add them
to the system and then make sure that their cards worked.
During this internship,
I gained a lot of experience in troubleshooting various computer problems.
I was able to use many of the things that I have learned in my classes
when troubleshooting these computer problems. One of the things that I
learned in some of my classes that I was able to use was dealing with IP
addresses.
Throughout my internship, we had various situations where we
had to use the different IP address commands and settings.
I enjoyed this whole internship experience. I do like helping people with
their computer-related problems. I feel that I have learned a lot during
this time. I also gained valuable experience in troubleshooting, networking,
and general maintenance of computers. I can see myself doing this in the
future.
