Kelley Broome from American InterContinental University London (AIU London) recently visited the Department of Retailing at the University of South Carolina. AIU London maintains high quality assurance regarding its academic programs. The institution has multiple accreditations and recognitions as well as an Industry Advisory Board. Academic and industry experts monitor students’ outcomes and teachers’ efforts to make sure everyone is staying “up to par.” All instructors have industry experience as well as advanced educational degrees. Retail Management and Fashion Merchandising students are able to study any cluster of subjects including: (a) fashion merchandising, (b) fashion design, (c) fashion photography (d) interior design, (e) historic interiors and architecture, (f) general business, (g) menswear and other fashion specialties, or (h) general education. Part time internships are also an option while studying, for junior and senior level students. Students may study abroad at AIU London for one term or an entire year. Marianne Bickle, Department Chair in Retailing at the University of South Carolina - Columbia, visited the campus in April 2009. Her personal experiences with the University administrators, faculty, campus, and of course the city revealed a side of AIU London that brochures are unable to capture. Students reside in AIU sponsored apartments. Each student has his/her own room. Course enrollment remains small so that each student is able to have individualized attention. Faculty members incorporate the surrounding businesses into the classroom. Students enrolled in an interior design room will visit exclusive interior designers in London. What makes the AIU London study abroad experience even more exciting is that AIU is located in the most fashion oriented in town. Located within easy walking distance to shopping, groceries, events, museums, and theatre, students are exposed to educational and cultural events on a daily basis. Students may participate in organized cultural activities through the school or venture out on their own for industry research and free time in the city. For information on how to apply for study abroad opportunities at AIU London, visit your USC academic advisor, the USC study abroad office in the Legare building or log onto the AIU Study Abroad Programs website at www.aiustudyabroad.com. Kelley Broome is USC’s AIU Study Abroad Programs representative and can be reached at kbroome@sap.aiuniv.edu. |
*Fashion Board is open to members of any major on campus, and the fall membership drive will begin in August 2009. For additional information, contact Dr. Sallie Boggs, Fashion Board advisor, at 777-3653 or sboggs@mailbox.sc.edu.
