Professor Li named Best Emerging Scholar in Tourism
Associate professor Dr. Xiang (Robert) Li has been named the Best Emerging Scholar In Tourism by the International Tourism Studies Association. Dr. Li was presented the B.E.S.T. award at the association’s biennial conference held on Aug. 23-25, 2012 in Bali, Indonesia. Said professor Alastair Morrison, president of the International Tourism Studies Association, in congratulating Dr. Li, “You are the first-ever recipient of this prestigious international award. It is in recognition of your outstanding scholarly contributions in tourism research and especially due to your focus on tourism in developing countries.” “I am truly honored and humbled by this award,” said Dr. Li. “I consider it a recognition of not me, but the line of research that I have been conducting which aims to facilitate the travel exchanges between developing and developed countries.” Dr. Li is an associate professor at the School of Hotel, Restaurant, and Tourism Management (HRTM) at the University of South Carolina, and associate director of USC’s Alfred P. Sloan Foundation Travel & Tourism Industry Center and the International Tourism Research Institute. He is also the school’s Ph.D. program coordinator. His research focuses mainly on destination marketing and tourist behavior with special emphasis on international destination branding, customer loyalty, and tourism in Asia. To date, he has been awarded more than $560,000 in funding in support of research for clients such as the U.S. Department of Commerce/Office of Travel and Tourism Industries, China National Tourism Administration, and the U.S. Travel Association, among others. In 2011, the University of South Carolina Office of Research named Dr. Li its Breakthrough Rising Star. The College of HRSM presented Dr. Li with the Researcher of the Year Award that same year.
