Some students might have to travel across the country in order to attend USC. Thorir Erlingsson, a graduate student in the College of HRSM, had to travel across the world.

Thorir is a first-year graduate student who is studying to receive his Master’s in International Hospitality and Tourism Management. He is also one of USC’s many international students, having received his undergraduate degree from the Hotel and Catering School of Iceland. On his 30th birthday, Thorir decided to go back to school for his Master’s so that he could become more involved with the research and development in the hospitality industry.

Thorir’s decision to attend USC for his graduate studies was not one based on facts, reputation or statistics. Instead, he made his decision after experiencing firsthand the hospitable atmosphere of Columbia itself.

Thorir explains that, after seeing the College of HRSM and visiting with Dr. Partlow, he and his wife went out for dinner. While at the restaurant, he lost his wedding ring but was able to find it with the help of a very attentive server.

“The help and hospitality I got there was amazing,” says Thorir, who has spent many years working in the restaurant industry. “When we left the restaurant, I was sure that this was the town where I wanted to study.”

Since moving to Columbia in May, Thorir is even more convinced that USC was the best decision. Not only has he been pleased with the College of HRSM, but Thorir explains that the EPI classes he took to improve his English were also helpful.

Although he has already spent time working in the hospitality industry, particularly in restaurants, Thorir says that his classes have all been helpful and interesting.

“When you have been working in the industry for a long time like I have, every lecture and everything you read gives you an idea of how you should have done something differently or of how you did a great job,” says Thorir.

As someone who has spent years working in the hospitality field, Thorir has nothing but words of encouragement for students.

“This field is fun,” says Thorir, “and if you are willing to work hard, you will be able to have a great time and a great career.”

While Thorir does expect to return to Iceland to continue working in the tourism industry, he says that he and his family will happily move again if the opportunity presents itself.
